Frolic Cabaret review. One night down, one to go!

Frolic Cabaret – Saturday July 6

It may have been a cold Ballarat night but people turned out in droves to attend the first Frolic Cabaret as part of Ballarat Winterfest 2019. There was a buzz in the air as people lined up outside the venue waiting for the doors to open at 7pm. Thankfully there was a fire pit going outside to keep punters warm.

Once the doors opened and people rushed in their names were quickly checked off and they were shown to their seats by our wonderful volunteers. Having their seats now reserved people grabbed a drink, ordered some food, and mingled in the bar area and outside by the fire. Hint for those coming this Saturday – doors open at 7pm sharp, not beforehand – so be prepared!

Act 1

Nellie Minelli

Host Nellie Minelli

Miss Nellie Minelli kicked off the show with the classic ‘Life Is A Cabaret’, introduced herself to the crowd and got some crowd participation happening. Cabaret audiences are expected to whoop and holler, and it wasn’t long before they were warmed up.

Nellie then introduced HollyPop to the stage – HollyPop may be a drag queen but she can sing live! HollyPop sang Kander and Ebb classic ‘Sara Lee’ as she comically stuffed brownies into her face.

Next up was Katherine Gale – wow, what a voice! Katherine did two songs, ‘Secret Love’ and ‘They All Laughed’. Her classical singing training really came across with some of those high notes.

Lil’ Jul was up next for something a little different that you don’t usually see at a Cabaret show. Lil’ Jul did two original raps – ‘Hi Skool’ and ‘Posiedon’. He had the crowd along with the ride for his performance.

Anna Phalaxis got the blood pumping with some burlesque next. Our first burlesque act of the night she took the stage by storm and ‘God’s Country’.

Katelyn Davey then did a Little Mermaid parody song about being short, ‘Part of your World’ and then some brilliant and sharp adult comedy afterwards. The crowd were laughing and cheering along to some of the blunt and witty home truths being delivered.

Maureen Andrew then took to the stage as the last performer of Act 1. She dominated the stage, chewed it up and spat it out. She had the audience both laughing at the start and then crying at the end of her two Shirley Bassey songs, ‘Goldfinger’ and ‘All by myself’. Definitely a highlight of the first act – her vocals blew off the roof!

Maureen Andrew or Shirley Bassey? You decide!

With that we had an emotional intermission where people grabbed some drinks, got some fresh air outside, sat around the fire pit raving about the first act of the show. When time came for people to come back inside for Act 2 people raced back to their seats.

Act 2

Nellie then told a very amusing story that had people laughing (especially that one woman up the back who kept setting everyone else off!) and then introduced Kara Chameleon to the stage.

Kara performed a very energetic burlesque performance to Adam Lambert’s ‘For Your Entertainment’ involving both a whip and a chair! It was clear who was in charge during this performance.

Kara’s energy was electric

Then Lil’ Jul was back on stage for two more pieces, ‘Cemetery’ and ‘Epilogue’.

Anna Phalaxis then graced the stage again for a particularly moving burlesque piece to ‘The Sound of Silence’. It was breathtaking.

Katherine then came back on stage and after opening up about her own story and the meaning of pride, and acknowledging those who have fought for LGBTIQA+ rights in the past sang two stunningly beautiful songs, ‘Love Never Dies’ from the musical Love Never Dies and ‘No-one Will Bruise’ from the musical ATLANTIS by Australian composer Matthew Robinson. Tears were shed again during some of those power notes. Katherine was truly superb!

Maureen took the stage again and ran with it. Singing ‘I Who Have Nothing’ and pride classic ‘I Am Who I Am’ she had the audience eating out of her hand again with those incredible vocals and stage presence.

Miss Minnie Mayhem then took to the stage and showed that she really is the premiere burlesque performer of Ballarat in a strong and confident performance that teased the audience. She raised the roof and wowed the crowd!

Lastly, HollyPop invited us to take a ‘Selfie’ as she absolutely blasted the stage with a more traditional drag show. The show ended on a satisfying climax!

Many thanks to the performers who all did a beyond fantastic job, and to the audience who clapped, cheered, laughed, and cried along. Thanks for all the loving vibes and we hope you enjoyed the show as much as we did!

Don’t forget we’re back again on Saturday night with some new performers and completely new acts! If you’ve read all of this and don’t have tickets for Saturday night, what are you waiting for?

At only $10 for concession or $20 full price for a whole night of entertainment you can’t go wrong. As Dennis, one first time Frolic punter along on Saturday night said, ‘it’s such a great deal for a night of entertainment – you can’t even get a movie ticket for those prices!’

Meet Evelyn, a new Frolic volunteer

Frolic Volunteer Profile – Evelyn

Evelyn is a recent arrival to Ballarat and we’re so glad she chose Ballarat when deciding to escape Brisbane (though we understand it’s been quite the adjustment temperature-wise!). Already jumping in to help out as a Frolic volunteer you may have met her during the Ballarat Heritage Weekend where she warmly welcomed people to the queer history exhibition and made sure they left with a Frolic Festival Save the Date flyer in their hand.

Get to know Evelyn a little bit more by reading her interview below!

Preferred first name: Evelyn
Pronouns: She
How do you identify on the LGBTIQA+ spectrum? Queer

Describe yourself in 25 words or less:
Ailurophile, Philosopher, Academic, Drag King, Artist, Stand up Comic, Author, Human Rights Activist, Antifascist, Velocipede Enthusiast, Social Justice Supporter, & Shero (female hero) Plangonologist.

How did you become involved in Frolic?
A friend sent me a link to the website before I moved to Ballarat.

What attracted you to becoming involved?
It was a mix of the familiar & the new. I was a new resident & I was familiar with the tasks involved in an arts festival because in Brisbane I had been a queer feminist activist, cabaret producer, festival volunteer, artist, drag king, writer for the queer press, & a performance artist.

What do you love about Frolic?
I love watching a young festival grow & blossom over the years.

What do you hope for Frolic’s future?
More people will become aware of the events & more people in the community will offer feedback & suggestions so the festival can fulfil the needs of the local community.

What are you looking forward to most at this year’s festival?
Meeting local people, helping events run smoothly, being behind the scenes supporting the artists, performers, & organisers.

Pitch a fantasy event for Frolic in the future:
Pet Parade (this was always the highlight of the Brisbane LGBTIQA Pride Festival Fair Day) with prizes for best costumes, best hair, best tricks, etc. [editors note: great idea! We’ll refer this to our festival working group to explore!]

Outside of Frolic, what are you most passionate about?
Returning to postgraduate study, & doing my PhD in Victoria.

Tell us about your relationship with Ballarat:
I moved to Ballarat at the very end of 2018 with my cat, bike, books, & female action figures.  I plan to study & continue to publish, exhibit, & perform. But first I needed some solitude & privacy as I established my new home. Volunteering with the local queer festival is my compromise between returning to a public career & enjoying anonymity.

What do you love about Ballarat?
It is a sophisticated, cosmopolitan city, yet a quiet, & peaceful, country town. The people are kind, friendly, & helpful.  The architecture is gorgeous. The art galleries are exciting. It’s just an hour & ten minutes away from Melbourne, where I have many friends. My cat loves having his own backyard!

Katherine Gale, is welcomed backed to Frolic!

Katherine Gale performed at our 2017 Frolic Queer Ball but was sadly missing from the 2018 Frolic Festival lineup. We couldn’t hold her back when put out the call for performers to be involved in Frolic Cabaret though!

We welcome her back with open arms. As a beautiful singer, she will bring tears to your eyes with her amazing voice.

Katherine Gale is a graduating student of the Bachelor of Music Theatre at the Federation University Arts Academy and an alumna of the Ballarat Arts Foundation.

Katherine Gale Heritage Song

With extensive training in Classical and Contemporary voice and experience in both Music Theatre and Opera, Katherine recently presented her first solo recital ‘Heritage of Song’ in the Art Gallery of Ballarat, to rave reviews.

Katherine is overjoyed to share her love of music and give back to the creative and beautifully diverse Ballarat community!

Don’t miss her at Frolic Cabaret tonight!

Maureen is an accomplished and highly sought after singer, actress, musical theatre and cabaret performer having performed on stage and screen for many years.

She is a proud platinum member of Actors Equity (MEAA). Her credits are far too long to list but highlights include large national and international tours with shows Cabaret, Hugh Jackman’s Boy From Oz, Billy Elliot and Saturday Night Fever.

Maureen Andrew

Maureen is a true chameleon and performer.

Having been a regular performer at ChillOut Festival, Maureen reached out to Frolic Festival after meeting us at the Ballarat Melbourne Gay and Chorus performance held recently.

Always fabulous, Maureen is gracing us with her presence to perform a couple of iconic Shirley Bassey numbers. We’re so happy to have her at Frolic Cabaret!

The Ballarat Frolic Festival will put on two loud and colourful cabaret shows featuring burlesque, singing and drag during the Ballarat Winter Festival on consecutive Saturdays.

The performances will focus on the avant-garde while giving both experienced and newer performers a place to shine on stage.

Ballarat Frolic Festival is an annual, volunteer-run festival that promotes LGBTIQA+ arts and culture each November but the organisers are also trying to branch out to connecting with other events throughout the year in an effort to connect with the wider community.

A recent collaboration saw the festival organise an exhibition of LGBTQIA+ history and tours of the city for Ballarat Heritage Weekend, with 700 people engaging with the events.

Jay Morrison, from Ballarat Frolic Festival, said the group had identified a need to work with other organisations and groups running events throughout the year to ensure there was a visible LGBTQIA+ presence.

It is also a way for the group to build a bigger audience within the community and showcase its presence year-round.

Frolic Festival aims to advance acceptance of LGBTQIA+ people, and improve their well-being while simultaneously promoting the community’s arts and culture.

Mr Morrison cited the recent community reaction to a story The Courierpublished about Alex Bayley’s experience as a non-binary person as an example of why the group exists.

“[The reaction] really strengthened our resolve to make sure that there is a positive and visible LGBTQIA+ presence in the community,” he said.

While we had a very strong yes vote in Ballarat, there are still people who have concerns about being in the community and being visible.

Jay Morrison

Mr Morrison said Frolic Festival’s ethos around being present within and connecting with the wider community was intended to result in making a difference collectively.

“That’s why we do this but we also want it to be fun as we are an arts and culture festival,” he said.

The group’s participation in Ballarat Winter Festival is a taste of what the group will put on during its festival later in the year.

Mr Morrison said the group tried to represent all aspects and ages of the LGBTQIA+ community as well as trying to provide interest to the wider community.

“The LGBTQIA+ community has always existed in Ballarat but has just not always been visible. We are trying to cater to the existing community here but also showing off the unique arts and culture of our community to wider Ballarat.

“We know there are people who come to our festival from Stawell and Ararat and we want to keep communicating with the wider surrounds to encourage them to join us.”

Mr Morrison said Frolic Festival, which is organised by about 30 active volunteers, would continue to grow each year, given that it saw a 20 per cent growth in attendance at its 2018 festival.

The two shows will be hosted and curated by the fabulous Nellie Minelli.

They will take place at The Printers Room on July 6 and 13. Tickets available through https://frolicfestival.org/events/

Ballarat Times – Frolic Cabaret will heat up Winterfest

Ballarat Times – Frolic Cabaret will heat up Winterfest

Written by Edwina Williams, July 3 2019

OVER two Saturday evenings this month, Ballarat Winter Festival and Ballarat Frolic Festival will unite to present exciting cabaret showcases.

With burlesque, singing, drag and more, focussing on the avant-garde, anything is possible, and the two nights will not be the same.

Ballarat Frolic Festival’s Jay Morrison said the showcases have been curated by their host, Nellie Minelli, and will be simply fabulous and very inclusive.

“We ran these last year for the first time and we’re bringing them back because they were so successful. We ended up filling the space so much, people were sitting on the floor, and we reached capacity,” he said.

“There’s a lot of local cabaret artists and performers who don’t get as much exposure as they deserve. There is a bit of a gap here, we’ve identified. There used to be the Cabaret Festival in town, that closed and left.”

In 2018, more new and experienced performers expressed their interest in working with Ballarat Frolic Festival, now in its third year. Mr Morrison knew it was time to find new avenues for this talent to be seen and heard throughout the year.

“We’re a real community organisation. This event is about making sure there’s an LGBTI presence during regular festival events during the year that Ballarat has, like the Ballarat Winter Festival,” he said.

“We’re all about making sure that everybody is included, and that includes everybody age wise. Some people think that we’re just for young people, we’re not.

“A cabaret event like this is for anybody over the age of 18. This festival is for you, it’s for everybody. It’s not just a bunch of young people, we’re for the whole community,” Mr Morrison said.

For young, fresh Drag artist, HollyPop, the Winter Festival brings an opportunity to get some more stage time.

“Drag is still very new to me and having the opportunity to polish my drag craft in front of audiences is invaluable,” she said.

“In this year’s cabaret I’m intending to really showcase my talent and experience to give everyone a fabulous and fun show.”

Ballarat Frolic Festival will flirt with Ballarat Winter Festival on Saturday, 6 July and Saturday, 13 July at The Printers Room from 7pm to 11pm.

Ticket prices are between $10 and $20, and all minors must be accompanied by an adult. More information is available at frolicfestival.org/events.

The full week-long Ballarat Frolic Festival program is coming up in November. The festival is a not-for-profit, volunteer run event promoting LGBTIQA+ regional arts and culture. The group pays their performers.

During Ballarat Heritage Weekend, 700 local people experienced the Ballarat Frolic Festival team’s queer history exhibition.

Lady Eleanora to take the stage at Frolic Cabaret this weekend!

Lady Eleanora time travels to us from the glitz and glamour of the 1920s and 30s. She brings style, sophistication and sass for your enjoyment. With a penchant for the gorgeous art-deco period, she swings and sways her way into your heart with her grace, charm and poise.

Sometimes daring, sometimes sweet and cheeky, but always elegant Eleanora.

Having recently performed at the Ballarat Beat Rockabilly Festival she will knock your socks off.
