2020 Art Show Call Out

Ballarat Frolic Festival Art Show 2020 – artist call for Rainbow Rebellion

Ballarat Frolic Festival as we know it might be postponed, but we’re still going full steam ahead with our 2020 Art Show: Rainbow Rebellion.

If you identify as LGBTQIA+ (or make LGBTQIA+ art) and have a connection to Ballarat or surrounds you are invited to submit work.

This year we’ll be exhibiting in Backspace Gallery. The exhibition will run from 5-29 November 2020, and all mediums are welcome. Frolic will once again be awarding prizes. Let’s celebrate our creativity, our diversity, and our pride!

Email frolicartshow2020@gmail.com for an application form, terms and conditions of entry, or to ask any questions. Deadline for applications is Friday, 25 September 2020.

Covid-19 and the 2020 festival

The Ballarat Frolic Festival Committee want to acknowledge the extraordinary effect of the Covid-19 pandemic and physical isolation we’re all experiencing right now.

We want to reiterate our belief that as a community we must come together and support each other. If anyone in our local Frolic or queer community is struggling at the moment please let us know so we can do what we can to support you. We are here for you.

We’ve done a lot of thinking about what the Covid-19 pandemic means for the Ballarat Frolic Festival in 2020. Already it has had a big impact.

We had plans to partner with the Melbourne Queer Film Festival (MQFF) for our own little queer film festival in Ballarat this month. This has been put on hold indefinitely until we are in a position to make a decision with MQFF whether to proceed.

We also had plans to run Frolic Cabaret during the Ballarat Winter Festival again after a successful sold-out season last year. Unfortunately, we have made the decision to cancel this event as it is too soon to know if the festival will be going ahead.

With many sponsors, venues and artists doing it tough right now we’ve been anxious to reach out and start planning the 2020 festival. We love our sponsors, venues and artists and know many are hurting right now.

Typically this is the peak planning period for the festival in November. So right now we are asking ourselves the question of, ‘what does the Ballarat Frolic Festival look like in 2020?’ We’d be interested in your thoughts on this question too. Please add your comments below.

At this stage, we’ve made the decision to cautiously proceed with the planning required to go ahead with our festival in 2020. We plan to regularly revisit this decision through the year and build in contingencies where we can as we gain a clearer picture of the road ahead for us all.

Event Producer Guide Rainbow Cover

Part of this year’s exciting plans involves partnering with event producers and artists to deliver events as part of the festival. We are proceeding with these plans cautiously but also acknowledge that for many it’s hard to focus on anything post-pandemic right now.

If you’re an event producer or artist who is interested in partnering to run your own event during the 2020 Ballarat Frolic Festival we would love to hear from you. You can head to this page for our 2020 Partner Events Producer Guide with all the information you need.

We believe that an important part of this difficult period involves hope that we will get through this and that community connection will be more important than ever once we do. We have hope that the Frolic community will be able to connect physically again soon at a future Frolic event.

Keep looking out for each other – we will get through this!

Much love to you,

Your BFF

Thank you for your response. ✨

Why Frolic is different…

The very lovely and talented Akasha Temple interviewed Benjamin and Fleur, two of our management committee, recently as part of their Country Lounge chat series. They discuss how Frolic Festival came to be and how we’re different from many other festivals. We’re really proud of Frolic and hope to see you in 2020.

2019 reflections and 2020 secrets!

The end of the year is always a great time for reflection so please indulge us a little with our end of year blog post!

As we love giving away prizes, we announce the winner of our $50 Bunnings Voucher below. We also tease some secrets up our sleeve for next year with some hidden clues in this post, plus we encourage you to save the date for Ballarat Frolic Festival 2020!

Reflections on 2019

2019 was undoubtedly the most successful year so far for Ballarat Frolic Festival. Thanks to the efforts of everyone, we really went from strength to strength.

Not only did we increase the reach and audience at our 2019 Festival but we had a strong presence during Ballarat Heritage Weekend with our history tours and groundbreaking history exhibition ‘We Have Always Been Here’.

Plus we sold out two Frolic Cabaret shows at Ballarat Winter Festival.

Click the hyperlinks above to find out more info from our blog about these events – including recaps, photos, videos and more!

We love an infographic!

It’s been fun tracking the rise of Frolic. Some of our stats for the year are pretty impressive. Check out this infographic we made!

Acknowledgements, thank you’s, air kisses…

The people who make up our community are truly the greatest.

Whether it’s all our amazing volunteers involved in the running of the festival, the sponsors who supported Frolic, or the audiences that turned up to have a great time – you all made a difference. You showed what we can do when our community comes together. This quote below from an attendee sums it up better than we could!

We’ll be back in the new year… with some secret announcements!

Save the dates now – our annual festival will return November 5 to 11, 2020.

As well as our festival, we have a couple of secrets that we can’t wait to share with you. Let’s just say, 2020 is going to be epic with some partnerships that’ll see some new and exciting Frolic events. As usual, we’ll be rolling out the red carpet for our email subscribers who will find out first AND get priority booking opportunities. Isn’t that exciting?!

Also, while on the topic of next year, we want to announce that writer, artist and awesome human-being Sarah Hart joined the Frolic Committee in the past couple of weeks. We’re super excited to have her on board and look forward to the excellent contributions she will bring to the team in 2020!

The Winner of our $50 Bunnings Voucher is…

…A very lucky person indeed! Some have asked, why a Bunnings Voucher? Well, we think Bunnings is definitely the queerest place in Ballarat. If you pop by on the weekend you’ll see plenty of our community there. It’s almost like a scene from Frolic Carnival Day – just without the drag queens and Yana Alana!

Anyway, without further ado, the lucky winner is Janelle M. Congratulations Janelle, we’ll be in touch with you directly to get that hot little voucher into your hands.

Finally, no matter how you celebrate the end of the year…

We hope you get some quality time in with family and friends. Rest up, laugh lots, have fun, and be safe!

Oh, by the way – see you at Midsumma? Anyone wanna catch the train with us to Carnival Day?? Let us know!

Lots of love,

Your BFF  xx

That’s a wrap on the 2019 Frolic Festival!

You turned up. You had fun. You laughed. You cried. You danced. You cheered. You engaged with local art. You met new people. You reconnected with old friends. You celebrated. You hugged. You stayed up late, and you got up early. You were visible in your support for the community, and you carried love in your heart. You made a difference!

Thank you from our heart to yours!

We’ll be back in 2020!

In order for us to grow and in order for us to learn – we want to hear from you! Please take a few short minutes to complete this survey. Your answers will be used to build and shape the festival next year. Plus you go in the running to win a $50 voucher from Bunnings.

Frolic makes WIN News AGAIN!

We’ve seen so much support from the broader community this year. We were really happy to talk with WIN News about the festival and why it means so much to the LGBTIQA+ community.

You can see their news piece below. Though for the record, we said we hoped we’d have 2000 people attend throughout the festival – we didn’t have 2000 on Carnival Day! Maybe next year??

Maureen Andrew is proving once and for all that diamonds really are forever…

Maureen is one of our most experienced performers, and it shows! Her stage presence is amazing. Maureen was in the original production of Hair: The Musical, and remembers a very different time for our community.

You can read more about that in this Courier article here.

Be prepared to be entertained in the second last event of the festival! Tickets still available. Head over to our program page and grab them now.

Community festival promoting visibility

Our fantastic coverage of this year’s Frolic Festival in The Courier continues with this article about two of our volunteers Max and Graham.

Our volunteers are the backbone of the festival. Without their assistance, we wouldn’t be able to host twice the number of events as we did last year.

Every volunteer has their own story and their own reasons for stepping up to assist but behind them all, it’s about finding and building our community. Read Max and Graham’s story here…
